Short answer: Google Ads buys you a place at the top of search results today, and stops the moment you stop paying. SEO earns your place in the free results, takes months to build, and keeps bringing enquiries after the work is done. Most small businesses should do both in the right order: use Google Ads to get enquiries now and learn which searches turn into customers, while SEO builds the free traffic that lowers your cost per enquiry over time. If you can only afford one and need customers this month, start with ads; if you can wait and want lasting results, start with SEO.

How Google Ads works

Google Ads is pay-per-click advertising. You choose the searches you want to appear for, write an ad and set a budget. When someone searches, Google runs an auction among the advertisers and shows the winning ads at the top or bottom of the results, labelled "Sponsored". You pay when someone clicks.

Your position depends on your bid and your ad's quality. Google's Quality Score looks at how likely people are to click, how relevant the ad is to the search, and how good the landing page is. A well-built ad and page can beat a competitor who simply bids more.

How SEO works

Search engine optimisation is the work that makes your website rank in the free results below the ads: pages that answer what people search for, a fast and well-structured website, links and mentions from other sites, and for local businesses, a strong Google Business Profile and reviews. You don't pay per click, but you pay in time and effort, and results build gradually.

Google Ads vs SEO at a glance

Google Ads SEO
Speed Enquiries within days of launch First movement in two to three months; steady enquiries in six months or more
Cost model You pay for every click, for as long as it runs You pay for the work; clicks are free
When you stop Traffic stops the same day Rankings fade slowly, often over months
Control Choose exact searches, locations, times and budget Google decides what ranks; you influence it
Trust Some people skip ads Many people trust the free results more
Learning Shows within weeks which searches bring customers Slower to show which searches convert
Best for Launches, offers, seasonal demand, testing Long-term, lower cost per enquiry

When to start with Google Ads

  • You need enquiries this month: a new business, a launch, or a slow season.
  • You are selling something seasonal or time-bound, such as Onam offers, admissions or a festival sale.
  • Your website is new and has no rankings yet.
  • You want to find out quickly which searches turn into paying customers before investing in SEO for them.

Ads only work if the page they send people to works. Send each ad to a page about exactly what it promised, with a clear way to call, WhatsApp or enquire.

When to start with SEO

  • You can wait a few months and want enquiries that don't cost per click.
  • People search for what you sell all year round.
  • Your competitors are paying a lot per click, and the free results are within reach.
  • You are a local business: much of local SEO, such as your Business Profile and reviews, costs time rather than money.

Why most businesses should do both

The two help each other. Ads show you, within weeks, which searches bring customers; SEO can then target those searches for free. A business that appears in both the ads and the free results for the same search looks more established and gets more of the clicks. And as SEO starts working, you can reduce ad spend on the searches you now rank for, and move it to new ones.

A simple plan for a small business:

  1. Fix the basics first: a fast website with clear pages for each service, tracking for calls, WhatsApp and forms, and a complete Google Business Profile.
  2. Run Google Ads for at least three months on the searches closest to buying, such as "[your service] near me" or "[your service] in [your city]".
  3. Start SEO alongside, for at least six months, beginning with the searches the ads proved valuable.
  4. Review every month: cost per enquiry from ads, enquiries from search and the Business Profile, and shift the budget towards what works.

Common mistakes

  • Sending ads to the homepage instead of a page about the exact service.
  • Running ads with no call or form tracking, so nobody knows what they brought in.
  • Bidding on broad searches like "website" or "dentist" instead of specific, local ones.
  • Expecting SEO results in a few weeks and stopping before it has had time to work.
  • Doing SEO for searches nobody makes, instead of the ones customers actually use.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO better than Google Ads?

Neither is better in every case. Google Ads is faster and more controllable; SEO is slower but keeps working without paying per click. For most small businesses the best answer is both: ads for enquiries now, SEO to lower the cost of enquiries over time.

Does running Google Ads improve my SEO rankings?

No. Google keeps the two separate: paying for ads does not raise your position in the free results. Ads can still help SEO indirectly, by showing which searches bring customers so you can target them with your pages.

How long should I run Google Ads before judging them?

At least three months. The first weeks are spent learning which searches, ads and pages work, and campaigns improve as poor searches are removed and budgets move to the ones that bring enquiries.

How long does SEO take to work?

Expect the first movement in Google within two to three months and steady enquiries from search in six months or more. Local results, such as appearing in the Google Maps results, often come sooner once your Business Profile and reviews are in order.

Can I stop Google Ads once my SEO is working?

Often you can reduce them for searches where you rank well in the free results. Many businesses keep a smaller ad budget for their most valuable searches, new services and seasonal offers.
