Short answer: local SEO is the work that makes your business appear when people nearby search for what you sell, in the Google Maps results and the map box at the top of search. Google ranks local results on three things: relevance (how well your business matches the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher) and prominence (how well known and well reviewed you are). You can't change distance, so local SEO improves the other two: a complete Google Business Profile, a website with clear local information, consistent listings across the web, a steady flow of reviews, and links and mentions from other local sites.
This guide explains each part and gives a simple plan in the order to do it, with examples from Kozhikode and the rest of Kerala.
What is local SEO?
Local SEO is search engine optimisation for searches with a place in them, or an implied one: "dentist near me", "bakery in Kozhikode", "AC service Kochi", "best biryani in Calicut". For these, Google shows a map with three businesses (often called the map pack) above the ordinary results, and a longer list on Google Maps.
For a shop, clinic, restaurant, school or service business, those three places bring more calls and visits than anything else on the page. Ordinary SEO helps your website rank; local SEO helps your business rank in the map.
How does Google decide who appears on the map?
Google says local results are based mainly on three factors:
- Relevance: how well your Business Profile and website match what the person searched for. Your categories, services and the words on your website matter here.
- Distance: how far your business is from the searcher, or from the place named in the search. You can't change this, which is why a business does not appear in the map for every part of a city.
- Prominence: how well known your business is, online and offline. Reviews (how many and how good), links and mentions on other websites, and your overall presence on the web all count.
Everything below improves relevance or prominence.
Step 1: Complete and verify your Google Business Profile
Your Business Profile is the listing itself, so it comes first. Choose the most specific primary category, list every service, add real photos, keep opening hours right (including Onam, Vishu, Eid and Christmas), and make sure the map pin sits on your building.
We cover this in detail, point by point, in our Google Business Profile checklist.
Step 2: Give your website clear local signals
Google checks your website to confirm what you do and where. A website that only says "we offer quality services" gives it nothing to match.
- Your name, address and phone number on every page, usually in the footer, written exactly as on your Business Profile.
- A contact page with an embedded Google Map and directions from a landmark people know, such as a mall, a junction or a bus stand.
- One page per main service, each saying where you offer it: "root canal treatment in Kozhikode" rather than one page listing everything.
- Local business structured data (schema markup), which tells search engines your business type, address, phone, hours and the areas you serve in a form they read directly.
- A page for each area you really serve, only if you have something specific to say about it. Copies of the same page with the town name swapped can harm you more than help.
- Fast loading on a phone. Most local searches happen on mobile, often on the move.
Step 3: Make your listings consistent everywhere
Your business also appears on directories and platforms: JustDial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, Facebook, Instagram, Apple Maps, Bing Places, and industry sites such as Practo for doctors or Zomato for restaurants. Google uses these as supporting evidence.
Check that the name, address and phone number are the same, character for character, on every one. An old listing with a previous phone number or address, often created years ago by someone else, weakens all the others. Claim it and correct it, or ask the site to remove it.
Step 4: Build a steady flow of reviews
Reviews are the part of prominence you control most directly, and the part where most Kerala businesses fall behind. One Kozhikode profile we reviewed had its categories, photos and hours in order, and 4 reviews; the three businesses shown above it on the map had between 150 and 220 each.
- Ask every customer, at the right moment, with a direct review link sent on WhatsApp right after the job is done.
- Reply to every review in the language it was written in, including the bad ones, calmly and with an offer to put things right.
- Keep them coming. Five a month, every month, does more than fifty in one week followed by silence.
- Never buy reviews or offer discounts for them. Google removes them and can suspend the profile.
Step 5: Earn local links and mentions
Links and mentions from other local websites tell Google your business is real and known in the area. Good sources in Kerala:
- Your trade or professional association's member list
- Local news sites and city pages that cover openings, events or achievements
- Suppliers, partners and clients who can list you on their own websites
- Events, sports clubs, colleges and charities you sponsor or work with
- Local guides and "best of" lists written by real publishers
One genuine link from a respected local website is worth more than dozens from directories nobody reads.
Step 6: Measure what the work brings in
- Business Profile Performance: calls, direction requests, website clicks and the searches that showed your profile, month by month.
- Tag your profile's website link so Google Analytics can count visits from the profile separately. We do this on our own profile; it's the only reliable way to see what the listing sends to the website.
- Google Search Console: look for searches that include your town or "near me", and which pages appear for them.
- Check the map yourself from different places. Your position changes across the city because distance is part of the ranking. Searching from your own shop only shows you the best case.

- Local business structured data.
- Fast on a phone.

- Old and duplicate listings claimed and fixed, or removed.
Reviews and links
- A review link sent to every customer after the job, and every review answered.
- Links from local associations, suppliers, clients and news sites.
Measurement
- The profile's website link tagged, so Analytics counts its visits.
- Calls, directions and enquiries checked every month, and the map checked from different parts of the city.
How long does local SEO take?
Fixing your profile, categories and listing details can change what you appear for within weeks. Building reviews and local links is slower and never really finishes, because your competitors keep going too. Treat local SEO as a monthly routine, not a one-off project, and judge it on calls and enquiries, not only on rank.
Common local SEO mistakes
- Keywords stuffed into the business name ("Best Dental Clinic Calicut Root Canal"), which breaks Google's rules and is a common cause of suspension.
- Two profiles for the same business, which split the reviews.
- A map pin on the wrong building, common in malls and business parks.
- A website with no address, or a different phone number from the profile.
- Copies of the same page for every town nearby.
- Asking only happy customers for reviews, or buying them.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between local SEO and regular SEO?
Regular SEO helps your website rank in the ordinary search results for any search. Local SEO helps your business appear in the map results for searches tied to a place, such as "near me" or a city name. Local SEO depends heavily on your Google Business Profile, reviews and listings, not only on your website.
Can I do local SEO without a website?
You can appear on Google Maps with only a Business Profile, but a website makes it much stronger. Google uses the website to confirm what you do and where, and customers check it before they call. A profile with a good website usually outranks one without.
Why does my business not appear on Google Maps for some areas of my own city?
Because distance is one of the three ranking factors. Google favours businesses close to the person searching, so you will rank well near your premises and less well across town. Stronger relevance and prominence, especially reviews, widen the area where you appear.
Do I need to pay Google to appear on Google Maps?
No. The map results are free; you cannot pay to rank in them. Google does sell ads that appear above or within the map results, labelled as sponsored, but those are separate from your organic position.
Is local SEO worth it for a small business in Kerala?
Yes, for any business whose customers come from nearby. Most people in Kerala now search on their phone before they visit, call or order, and the three businesses in the map get most of those calls. Much of the work, like completing your profile and asking for reviews, costs nothing but time.
