To build a website for a small business: decide what it must do for you, register a domain in your own name, choose how to build it, plan a handful of pages, write content that answers your customers' questions, make it fast on phones, and set up Google Business Profile and Search Console before you launch. Then keep it up to date. A business website built by an agency like ours takes one to two weeks.

Most small business websites fail for the same reasons: nobody decided what the site was for, the content describes the business instead of answering customers' questions, and it is slow on a phone. This guide walks through each step in order, whether you build the site yourself or hire someone.

1. Decide what the website must do

Before you think about colours or templates, decide the one thing you want a visitor to do. For most small businesses it is one of these:

  • Call or WhatsApp you: shops, clinics, repair and home services, consultants.
  • Book an appointment: salons, clinics, tutors, studios.
  • Ask for a quote: contractors, manufacturers, agencies, B2B suppliers.
  • Buy online: anyone selling products.

That one action shapes every page: where the buttons go, which pages you need and what each page must say.

2. Get a domain in your own name

Your domain (yourbusiness.in or yourbusiness.com) is your address online. Register it in your own name, with your own email address, and keep the login. Make sure the hosting account and the website files are in your name too.

This matters later. Businesses lose their website, or pay to get it back, when the domain or hosting was registered by a developer who has since moved on.

3. Choose how to build it

Option Good for Watch out for
Website builder (Wix and similar) A simple site you'll update yourself; quick to start A monthly subscription; limits as you grow; harder to move away
WordPress Most business websites; thousands of plugins; easy to update Needs regular updates and backups to stay secure
Custom build Fast, flexible sites, web apps and anything unusual Needs a developer to build and change
Online store (Shopify or WooCommerce) Selling products with payments, GST invoices and shipping Pick the platform for your products and team

For an online store, our Shopify vs WooCommerce comparison explains the choice for India.

4. Plan the pages

A small business website rarely needs many pages. Start with:

  • Home: what you do, where, and the one action you want.
  • One page per main service: what it is, who it's for, how it works, and the questions customers ask about it.
  • About: who runs the business and why customers can trust you.
  • Reviews or examples of your work: real photos and real customers.
  • FAQs: the questions you answer on the phone every week.
  • Contact: address, phone, WhatsApp, opening hours and a map.

Add a page for each area you serve only if you have something specific to say about it. Copies of the same page with the town name changed do more harm than good.

5. Write content that brings enquiries

Visitors decide in seconds whether you can help them. On every page:

  • Say what you do and where, in the first lines.
  • Answer the questions customers ask before they call: how long it takes, what's included, how to book, what happens next.
  • Show proof: reviews, photos of real work, the businesses you've helped.
  • End with one clear next step: call, WhatsApp, book or buy.

Write the way your customers speak. If they search for "AC service in Kozhikode", use those words, not "climate control solutions".

6. Design for phones first

Most visitors to a small business website arrive on a phone, often on mobile data. So:

  • Put a tap-to-call button and a WhatsApp button where they're always easy to reach.
  • Keep pages fast: small images, few heavy plugins, no auto-playing video.
  • Use readable text and buttons big enough for a thumb.
  • Test the site on a real phone, not only on a laptop.

7. Basic SEO from day one

You don't need to be an SEO expert to start well:

  • Give every page a clear title and description that say what it is and where.
  • Put your name, address and phone number on every page, exactly as on your Google Business Profile.
  • Create and verify your Google Business Profile, and link it to the website. Our Google Business Profile checklist covers it point by point.
  • Add the site to Google Search Console and submit the sitemap, so Google finds every page.

8. Hosting, security and backups

  • Use HTTPS (the padlock), which most hosts include.
  • Keep the platform, theme and plugins updated.
  • Run backups that are stored off the server, and check that they restore.

A website is not finished on launch day; our guide to website maintenance explains what an annual maintenance contract should cover.

9. Launch checklist

  1. Every contact form sends to the right inbox.
  2. Phone and WhatsApp buttons work on a phone.
  3. Google Analytics is collecting visits.
  4. Search Console is verified and the sitemap submitted.
  5. Your Google Business Profile links to the website.
  6. Pages load quickly on a phone on mobile data.
  7. A privacy policy page is live.
  8. The site has a favicon and a preview image for when it's shared on WhatsApp.
  9. A helpful "page not found" page exists.
  10. Backups are running.

10. Build it yourself, or hire someone?

Build it yourself with a website builder if the site is simple, you have the time, and you'll keep it updated. Hire someone when the website has to bring enquiries, rank in Google, take payments or connect to other systems, or when your time is worth more running the business.

If you hire, compare companies on the same points: live work like yours, a fixed written quote and timeline, ownership of your domain and code, and support after launch. Our 10 questions to ask a web design company help you compare.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I build a website for my small business?

Decide what it must do, register a domain in your name, choose a builder, WordPress or a custom build, plan a few clear pages, write content that answers customers' questions, make it fast on phones, and set up Google Business Profile and Search Console before launch.

How long does it take to build a small business website?

With an agency, one to two weeks for a business website and four to six weeks for an online store. Doing it yourself depends on your time; the content usually takes longest.

How much does a small business website cost?

It depends on the pages, the features and whether you sell online. Website builders charge a monthly subscription; an agency quotes for the build, plus hosting and the domain each year. We give a fixed quote after a free consultation.

Do I need a website if I have Instagram and WhatsApp?

Yes, if customers search Google for what you sell. A website can rank in Google, links from your Business Profile, and is yours; social media accounts aren't.

What pages should a small business website have?

A home page, one page per main service, an about page, reviews or examples of your work, answers to common questions, and a contact page with your address, phone, WhatsApp and a map.

Can I build my business website myself?

Yes, with a website builder, for a simple site. Hire someone when the site needs to bring enquiries, rank in Google, take payments or connect to other systems.
